This sleep test is considered a gold standard for the diagnosis of sleep disorders. When it is carried out at home , it is called a Level II PSG.
Level I PSG is performed in the hospital, with a technologist available to monitor the study through the night.
Procedure of Polysomnography recording at home:
Stick-on electrodes are applied over the scalp and chin by a qualified technologist, and two narrow belts are applied around the chest and abdomen to record respiratory effort and abdominal wall movements. A pulse oximeter is attached over a finger to record oxygen saturation throughout the night. These cables are then connected to a small PSG machine where this data is recorded and stored.
You will be asked to sleep in a position comfortable to you. Entire night’s data is recorded. Next morning the technologist disconnects the cables and the PSG machine. The digital data recorded on the PSG lab is analyzed by our specialist doctors to determine whether you have a sleep disorder.
If Obstructive Sleep Apnea ( OSA) is diagnosed, you may need treatment for it.

If Obstructive Sleep Apnea ( OSA) is diagnosed, you may need treatment for it.
If OSA is detected, a Titration study is carried out another night.
Fewer electrodes are applied for this test, but it is also an overnight study. This evaluation determines the range of air pressure you will require to keep your airways open in sleep, thus treating your Obstructive Sleep Apnea.

No. The test is non-invasive and not painful.
Belts are applied around your chest and abdomen however, they are not painful. You will get used to them in a few minutes.
Yes. The technician will show you how to unhook one or two main cable connections. You can then walk to the bathroom.
No. Sleeping on the stomach is not recommended during the test. You can sleep on your back or side . Sleeping on the back and on your sides provides valuable sleep data in various sleeping positions.
Insomnia is a sleep disorder where people have difficulty falling or staying asleep. Insomnia varies in how long it lasts and how often it occurs. About 50% of adults experience occasional bouts of insomnia and one in 10 suffer from chronic insomnia.
A Polysomnogram is useful because it gives detailed information on your Sleep hygiene and Sleep Cycle.
The Sleep staging in this Hypnogram suggests good sleep hygiene and sleep efficiency.
The sleep stages seen in the Night Hypnogram shown below suggest Poor sleep efficiency, which can be treated and improved.
Clinical assessment will be done by Dr Joy Desai or Dr Anuradha Shah , who will then discuss treatment options.
Several treatment modalities are available. If you suffer from insomnia, please get in touch with the expert physicians at Sleep Associates.
Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT) is also called a nap study.
It is performed for people with excessive daytime sleepiness once Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) has been excluded.
This test can identify sleep disorders such as narcolepsy and idiopathic hypersomnia.
PROCEDURE: It is performed during daytime. Typically this study is done after an initial overnight polysomnogram (PSG) study.
Only scalp and chin stick-on electrodes are applied. The cannula in the nostril, chest and abdominal belts and pulse oximeter are not attached.
Five scheduled naps at 2 hour intervals are advised during the day, usually two hours after waking up.
Generally, a patient will be asked to lie on the bed in a darkened quiet room for 20 minutes with the goal of falling asleep. A technician will monitor for the onset of sleep , in particular, REM sleep. After 20 minutes, the person will be awakened or told that the time for the nap has ended. Then, at two-hour intervals, this process is repeated 4 or 5 times. Typically Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT) will take 8 to 10-hours.
